More about the Mpemba effect...

In the 1960s, a student named Mpemba noticed that hot ice cream mixture froze faster than cold ice cream mixture, and was puzzled by this. When he asked his teacher about it, she rejected him and said that such a phenomenon would never happen. A university teacher, Dr Osborne, came to visit his high school and Mpemba asked him about it. Intrigued, the professor went to experiment, and published this as the "Mpemba Effect".
